About Yash Raj Chopra

Yash Raj Chopra was born to Vilayati Raj
Chopra in Lahore (now in Pakistan) in a
Punjabi family. He was the youngest of
the eight children.He is a writer, director,
and producer of Bollywood movies in
India. Waqt, Deewar, Lamhe, Darr, Dil To
Pagal Hai, and santhosh-divya are some
of the highly successful movies which
Yash Chopra directed. He is founder of
Yash Raj Films.
Yash initially worked as an assistant to I.
S. Johar, and then for his director-
producer brother, B.R. Chopra. Baldev
Raj gave him his first directorial
opportunity in Dhool Ka Phool. Later he
set up his own movie production
company, Yash Raj Films.
Dag (1973) was Yash's first movie under
Yash Raj banner.
His string of hits with Amitabh made him
one of the golden directors who had a
special working relationship with Amitabh
Bachchan ( Ramesh Sippy , Prakash
Mehra, Manmohan Desai, and Hrishikesh
Mukherjee being the other four).
Yash and his wife, Pamela, have two
sons: Aditya Chopra and Uday Chopra.
Aditya is a film director and manages
most of Yash Rj Production House. Uday
is an actor; (he received his first break in
Aditya's Mohabbatein).
In 1965,he got Filmfare Best Director
Award,for Waqt.In 1969,he got Filmfare
Best Director Award,for Ittefaq.In
1973,he got Filmfare Best Director
Award,for Daag.In 1975,he got Filmfare
Best Director Award,for Deewar.In
1975,he got Filmfare Best Movie
Award,for Deewar.
In 1991,he got Filmfare Best Movie
Award,for Lamhe.In 1995,he got Filmfare
Best Movie Award,for Dilwale Dulhania
Le Jayenge.In 1997,he got Filmfare Best
Movie Award,for Dil To Pagal Hai.In
2004,he got Filmfare Best Movie
Award,for Veer-Zaara.In 2006,2007,2008
he got Filmfare Power Award.
Yash Chopra was honoured along with
the Egyptian comedy superstar Adel
Imam and the Oscar Winning actor
Morgan Freeman as the Asian, Arab and
Hollywood honorees in the Dubai Film
Festival "In the Spotlight", which honors
the work of eminent actors, producers
and directors from around the world for
their distinguished service to the film
industry.He has been honoured by the
Swiss Government for rediscovering
Switzerland and recently, he was
presented a Special Award by Ms. Ursula
Andress on behalf of the Swiss
Government. He is currently on the
Advisory Board of the Information &
Broadcasting Ministry of the Government
of India.He is the Founder Trustee of
Film Industry Welfare Trust established
in the year 1996.He is the Vice President
of the Film Producers Guild of India since
the last 10 years.He is the only Indian
Film Producer and Director to receive the
BBC Asia Awards twice in 1998 and 2001
for his outstanding contribution in
films.He is the recipient of the Dr.
Dadabhai Naoroji Millennium Lifetime
Achievement in 2001.He is the recipient
of Certificate of Recognition from the
British Tourist Authority and British Film
Commission for promoting tourism in the
UK through his films.He is the recipient
of the Vocational Excellence Award by
the Rotary Club.He has been awarded
Outstanding Achievement Awards by the
apex bodies of Indian Industry like the
CII (Confederation of Indian Industry).He
was honoured by the International
Indian Film Academy (IIFA) at Malaysia
for his outstanding contribution to Indian
cinema.The British Film Institute
handpicked Yash Chopra for a book
written by Dr. Rachel Dwyer in their
World Directors Series. This book was
launched amidst great fanfare in London
and showcases the glorious 5-decade
career of Yash Chopra.He was honoured
by NAASCOM (National Association of
Software and Service Companies) and
AIAI (All India Association of Industries)
for his outstanding achievements.He has
also been awarded the Priyadarshini
Award for his outstanding contribution to
Indian cinema. This award was presented
to him by the Deputy Prime Minister
Mr.L.K.Advani.He was also chosen for
the Dadasaheb Phalke Award for 2001,
the topmost and the highest honour
given in the Indian film industry.He had
been given the Maharastra state
governments Raj Kapoor and V.
Shantaram Awards, in recognition of his
impressive contributions to the Hindi film
industry.He was honoured at the 2nd
Dubai International Film Festival.He was
honoured with "Lifetime Achievement
Award" at the 4th Pune International
Film Festival 2006 [P.I.F.F.]He received a
lifetime membership to BAFTA for his
contribution to the Indian Film Industry.
He is the first Indian to be honored at
BAFTA in 59 year history of the
academy.He was conferred with an
Honorary Doctorate in Art by Chancellor
of the University Brandan Foster by the
Leeds Metropolitan University in
Yorkshire.He was conferred with the
France's highest civilian honour, Legion
of Honour.
